Combining artistic creativity and computer competency

A unique course combining the development of artistic creativity and technical computer expertise to produce the next generation of creative computing professionals.

Focus is on creative thinking which grows out of the juxtaposition of science and art.

This programme is aimed at those who may want to work at the intersection of technology and art, Web development, animation, games, mobile and other applications, and the development of new creative software applications.

It is also appropriate for artists, musicians, film-makers and others who wish to apply their creative thinking to original software development, and for computing professionals who wish to include a creative component in their work.

Job Prospects

In the 2017 Graduate Employment Survey, it was found that 82.1% of graduates were employed within six months of the final examinations. Among them, 81.2% were working in jobs related to their course of study.

Local faculty, with intensive workshops by UK academics.

Delivery Mode

Lectures, group discussions, workshops and online study

Duration of each lesson is 3 hours.

Mode of Study

Full time classes are held in three-hour blocks between Monday and Saturday, starting at 8.30am, 12pm or 3.30pm. There are occasional classes on weeknights at 7pm and weekends.

Candidature Period

IFP + Standard BSc (Hons) (12 units) 4 years / 8 years
Standard BSc (Hons) (12 units) 3 years / 8 years
Standard BSc (Hons) (With RPL – 8 units) 2 years / 8 years

No refund or recourse should the student fail to complete within the maximum period.

At 娇色导航, students who are academically weak and find it difficult to progress or complete the programme within the minimum duration will receive counselling.

娇色导航 reserves the right to withdraw a student who cannot cope with the demands of the programme, especially when the student’s pass has expired.

Minimum Class Size

Minimum class size to commence: 25 students. Students will be informed within 30 days after the application period.

Curriculum

Students are required to complete a total of 12 full courses:

Year 1 Units

  • CO1102 Mathematics for computing
  • CO1109 Introduction to Java and object-oriented programming
  • CO1110 Introduction to computing and the Internet
  • CO1112 Creative computing 1: image, sound and motion

Year 2 Units

  • CO2209 Database systems
  • CO2220 Graphical object-oriented and Internet programming in Java
  • CO2226 Software engineering, algorithm design and analysis
  • CO2227 Creative computing 2: interactive multimedia

Year 3 Units
Three compulsory half units:

  • CO3346 Sound and music
  • CO3348 Interaction design
  • CO3355 Advanced Graphics and Animation

PLUS three half units from the following:

  • CO3310 Artificial intelligence
  • CO3311 Neural networks
  • CO3318 Information systems management
  • CO3323 Electronic commerce
  • CO3326 Computer security
  • CO3353 Software engineering project management (CO2226)

PLUS a compulsory project:

  • CO3320 Project (full unit)

Note: All assessments include coursework and written exam except CO1102 which only has written exam.

Entry Requirements

General Entrance Requirements (GER) are:

  • At least 17 years or older by 30 November in the year of registration with UOL
  • Have at least equivalent to B4 grade at GCE ‘O’ Level Mathematics
  • Provide proof of competence in English acceptable to the University, such as a pass (Grade C6 and above) in the GCE ‘O’ Level English Language Examination
  • Two approved GCE ‘A’ or h6 level subjects and three approved GCE ‘O’ level subjects (at not less than grade C) OR
  • Three approved GCE ‘A’ or h6 level subjects and one approved GCE ‘O’ level subject (at not less than grade C) OR
  • Three h6 passes provided that at least grades D,E,E OR
  • Two h6 and two H1 passes; all are in non-overlapping subjects OR
  • Possess diploma awarded by a polytechnic in Singapore (or its equivalent)

Exemption Eligibility

Holders of relevant IT qualifications or diplomas may be considered by UOL for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) of up to 4 full courses at combined Levels 1 and 2.

A fee of £103 (per full unit) will be charged by the University for processing discretionary RPL.

Assessment & Exams

Pass the assessment for 12 full units to complete the programme.

Except for unit CO1102 Mathematics for computing, whose assessment is 100% examination-based, all other units have both coursework and examination components.

Most full and half units require students to complete two assignments. Both coursework and an examination are compulsory.

Grading Scheme

70-100 : First Class Honours
60-69   : Upper Second Class Honours
50-59   : Lower Second Class Honours
40-49   : Third Class Honours
0-39     : Fail

Promotion

The examinations are held only once a year in May. To commence on the Level 3 units, candidates must have passed at least 6 full units at Level 1 and 2 combined. To commence work on the Level 3 final year project, a minimum of three Level 2 units must have been passed. Candidates who do not perform well may fail the coursework and/or the examination component.

It is possible to repeat only the component you have failed. A candidate can re-sit a paper while pursuing other new units.

Units which have been passed may not be retaken. Students are allowed to progress through each academic year, repeat failed unit/s immediately the following year till they meet the requirement to graduate.

Attendance requirement

Local: 75%
Student’s Pass holders (Dependent Pass holders/ Long-term Visit Pass holders): 90%

Graduation

The award of the BSc (Hons) degree requires successful completion of all 12 units.

A student who does not qualify for honours may be awarded a Diploma of Higher Education in Computing Studies as an exit award.

Graduates may choose to participate in the presentation ceremony on 娇色导航 campus in April or the University of London (UK) in March.

Graduates of the UOL International Programmes may progress to postgraduate studies either locally or overseas.
